CAUTION: Often performance
shops will list parts for sale with simply "Non-Turbo Eclipse" listed as a description of
the car it will fit. These parts will most likely NOT WORK on the Spyder GS, since they
were likely designed for the non-turbo 420a Chrysler engine.
Bolt-On Engine Performance Related Upgrades
Intake System: Use any 2g turbo hi-flow filter & MAS adaptor, such as the K&N FIPK or equivalent. At this time, there is no known full intake pipe kit for the Spyder. You could possibly have a mandrel bent pipe made to fit, but the cost would likely outweigh the benefits. Simply replacing the restrictive stock filter & airbox will yield impressive HP gains (5hp-10hp)
Exhaust System: Use any 2g turbo FWD cat-back system and hi-flow cat. The downpipe would have to be custom made if you choose to replace the stock unit, which may be difficult given the flange on the exhaust manifold side.
Headers: There are a few vendors that have made headers for the 4G63 non-turbo engines (found in 1G Eclipse & Talon non-turbo). As such, those should bolt onto the 4G64 without a problem. However, to my knowledge, this has not been tested or done by anyone. Proceed at your own risk as it is likely you'll need some sort of custom exhaust work to join the headers to the stock cat location. Also, RPW (from Australia) has headers for the 4G64 Spyder.
ECU Swap: You can swap to the 2G Eclipse turbo ECU with minimal effort. The main reason for this swap is if you are going to turbo your car, and you will need knock control. Or, if you want to swap to a larger 1G Eclipse throttle body, and want the idle motor to work. For a tutorial, Click Here
Throttle Body: The 60mm throttle body from a 1G 4G63T engine will bolt up. You will need to port out the intake manifold to match. Also, the idle motors are different, so you either need to adapt the stock idle motor, or swap to a 4G63T ECU and run a idle motor from a turbo car.
Turbo System!: See the Turbo Parts & Installation link above
Plug Wires: Not exactly a performance mod, but most do it anyway. Magnecor makes wires specifically for our car. Their part number is #45345.
DOHC Head Swap: Yes, it is possible to put the 4G63T DOHC head on our block. Click Here.to find out more information.
UnderDrive Pulleys: The 4G63T crank, alternator, and power steering pulley will fit the 4G64. Use the Buschur crank pulley, as it has a harmonic dampener built in.
Fuel Pump: Any that will fit the 2G FWD Eclipse turbo, such as the Walbro 190lph pump
Head Studs: Buy the 2G Eclipse Turbo ARP head studs
Oil Filter Housing Mod: Modify the stock filter housing for a 2nd oil pressure sender (for installing an aftermarket oil pressure gauge). Click here to find out how!
Camshaft Upgrade: Racing Performance Works out of AU has camshaft / valvetrain upgrades for the 16v SOHC head.
Balance Shafts: Balance shaft removal is the same as the 4G63T engines. See the VFAQ page for directions.
Pistons: JE, Weisco, Ross and perhaps others are starting to make 4G64 forged pistons - highly recommended if you plan on running more than 10lbs boost, or want more than 250whp
Connecting Rods: Same as 2g 4G63t rods, so nearly any aftermarket rod will work. Watch for clearance problems because of the 4G64's rod angle, however.
Sway Bars: The front sway bars made for the turbo eclipse will fit. However, since the Spyder came without a stock rear sway bar, you must buy a few parts to install one. For details on this, and to buy sway bars, see the RM Racing web site.
Springs: Since the Spyder is heavier in the rear than a regular FWD Eclipse, you must buy springs made for a AWD Eclipse. Eibach makes the most popular kit. Buy the Pro-Kit, NOT the Sportline Springs (will drop the car tooooo low). Price is about $225.
Camber Kits: Camber kits from a Eclipse Turbo FWD will fit
Struts: Struts from a FWD Eclipse Turbo will fit. I recommend the Tokico Illumina 5-way adjustable struts. If you shop around, you can get all 4 corners for ~$350.
Front Strut Tower Bar: Same as 2G FWD Turbo car. Use any aftermarket one that fits your style.
Front Brakes: Rotors & pads from a 2G FWD Eclipse Turbo will fit. Powerslot rotors are recommended for stock size.
Rear Brakes: !!DRUM TO DISC CONVERSION!! You can upgrade your rear drum brakes to disc. Click Here to go to the rear drum to disc conversion page.
Clutch: Any clutch kit from a 2G FWD turbo, including ACT 2100 & 2600, Centerforce Dual-friction, etc.
Flywheel: Any 7-bolt flywheel from a 2g FWD turbo car
Clutch fluid line: RRE Stainless clutch line for 2G works fine
Tranny Fluid: BG SynchroShift II Synthetic gear lube or others that are similar
Differential: Quaife LSD for a 2G FWD turbo car will work
